Ein geplanter Hafenausbau rund um Shark Island in Namibia bedroht einen zentralen Erinnerungsort an den deutschen Kolonialgenozid an den Ovaherero und Nama. Während Betroffene am 11. April in Namibia protestieren, demonstrieren wir zeitgleich in Berlin in Solidarität mit ihnen – für die Anerkennung des Völkermordes, für Reparationen und den Schutz dieses historischen Ortes.

Das Deutsche Kaiserreich verübte zwischen 1904 und 1908 einen Genozid an den Ovaherero und Nama sowie Damara und San im heutigen Namibia. Bis heute weigert sich die Bundesregierung, diesen Genozid juristisch anzuerkennen. Statt echter Aufarbeitung verhandelt Deutschland ein Abkommen mit Namibia – ohne die legitimen Vertreter:innen der betroffenen Gemeinschaften. Dieses Abkommen vermeidet Reparationen und dient vor allem deutschen Interessen.
Gleichzeitig treiben deutsche Unternehmen wie Enertrag mit politischer Unterstützung der Bundesregierung ein Mega-Projekt zur Erzeugung von „grünem“ Wasserstoff voran. Das Problem: Es ist auf Land geplant, das den Nama im Zuge des Genozids geraubt wurde. Zudem liegt in der Region, in der das Projekt Hyphen umgesetzt werden soll, Shark Island – einer der zentralen Gedenkorte des Genozids. Auf der Halbinsel befand sich ein Konzentrationslager, in dem Schätzungen zufolge rund 4.000 Ovaherero und Nama ums Leben kamen. Für die Nachfahren der Überlebenden ist Shark Island ein Ort der Trauer, der Erinnerung und des Widerstands.
Dieser Ort ist heute bedroht – durch den geplanten Ausbau des Hafens von Lüderitz, der auch Großprojekten wie dem Wasserstoffprojekt Hyphen zugutekäme. Deshalb protestieren die betroffenen Gemeinschaften in Namibia und bilden eine Menschenkette zu seinem Schutz.

Hands off Shark Island – Reparations instead of resource extraction frenzy
Commemoration – Protest – Solidarity with the descendants of the genocide
Between 1904 and 1908, the German Empire committed genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama, as well as Damara and San, in what is now Namibia. To this day, the German government refuses to legally recognize this genocide. Instead of genuine accountability, Germany is negotiating an agreement with Namibia – without the legitimate representatives of the affected communities. This agreement avoids reparations and primarily serves German interests.
At the same time, German companies such as Enertrag, with the political backing of the German government, are pushing forward a large-scale project to produce “green” hydrogen. The problem: it is planned on land that was taken from the Nama during the genocide. In addition, Shark Island – one of the central memorial sites of the genocide – is located in the region where the Hyphen project is to be implemented. A concentration camp once stood on this peninsula, where an estimated 4,000 Ovaherero and Nama lost their lives. For the descendants of the survivors, Shark Island is a place of mourning, remembrance, and resistance.
Today, this site is under threat – due to the planned expansion of the port of Lüderitz, which would also benefit large-scale projects such as the Hyphen hydrogen project. That is why affected communities in Namibia are protesting and forming a human chain to protect this place.
